Afghan Khal MohammadiHand KnottedRug

Black / Dark red124 x 202 cm

The Khal Mohammadi rug takes its name from an influential Turkmen weaver who lived in northern Afghanistan. This specific style has become one of the most recognisable and respected traditions in the region, known for its consistent quality and deep, atmospheric colour palette that often centres on shades of red.

These rugs are typically defined by their use of a dense pile, which results from a traditional hand-knotting technique that prioritises durability and a lustrous finish. The Wool is often processed to retain its natural lanolin, which gives the finished rug a subtle sheen and makes it naturally resistant to dirt and wear.

Visually, Khal Mohammadi rugs are celebrated for their repeating geometric motifs, often featuring the iconic 'gul' or elephant-foot design, which is set against a dark, saturated field. These patterns are enclosed by borders that frame the composition, creating a balanced and formal appearance that has remained popular for decades.

Collectors value these rugs not only for their striking visual depth but also for their status as a bridge between nomadic heritage and settled craft. Owning a Khal Mohammadi is a way of preserving the skill of Middle Eastern weavers and celebrating a tradition that has remained largely unchanged by the pressures of modern, fast-paced production.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans, a process that requires immense focus and dedication. By placing each knot individually, the weaver ensures a level of structural integrity and pattern clarity that is impossible to achieve through machine-assisted methods.

With a total weight of 7.8 kg across its 2.5 m2 surface, the rug displays a substantial and dense construction. This weight is a direct result of the generous amount of Wool used and the tight tension of the hand-knotting process, which collectively produce a durable, high-quality floor covering built to last for generations.
