Buy runner rugs and carpet runners

Runner rugs are long, narrow rugs – usually around 80 cm wide – made for the spaces a standard rug doesn’t suit: hallways, galley kitchens, and either side of a bed. At Rugvista they run from 80 x 200 cm up to 80 x 500 cm, in hard-wearing jute, soft wool and cotton, and easy-clean washable designs, so you can find the perfect fit for your home.

Choosing a runner rug

The first decision is length. Runners come in three tiers: short runners under 160 cm for compact spots, long runners of 230–349 cm for most hallways, and extra long runners over 350 cm for a full corridor or open-plan kitchen. Material is the other choice, and it comes down to traffic: jute runner rugs are hard-wearing and easy to sweep in busy hallways and kitchens, while cotton and wool runner rugs feel softer underfoot beside a bed or in a living room. Where spills are likely, a washable runner allows you to effortlessly maintain a fresh and clean look in high-traffic areas like hallways and kitchens.

Frequently asked questions

A runner rug is a long, narrow rug – usually around 80 cm wide – designed for corridors and other slim spaces. Also called a carpet runner, it comes in lengths from 80 x 200 cm up to 80 x 500 cm at Rugvista, so it suits everything from a short entryway to a full hallway.

Runners are typically about 80 cm wide, with lengths grouped into short runners (under 160 cm), long runners (230–349 cm) and extra-long runners (over 350 cm). Popular sizes include 80 x 200 cm, 80 x 250 cm, 80 x 300 cm, 80 x 350 cm and 80 x 500 cm, with a few wider and one-of-a-kind hand-knotted sizes too.

Measure the length of your hallway and choose a runner that leaves roughly 20–30 cm of bare floor at each end and 10–12 cm along each side, so it sits centred without crowding the skirting. An 80 x 250 cm or 80 x 300 cm runner fits most hallways; for a long corridor, size up to 80 x 400 cm or 80 x 500 cm rather than laying two runners end to end.

It depends on where it goes. Jute is hard-wearing and easy to clean, which suits high-traffic hallways and kitchens. Wool is warm, resilient and naturally stain-resistant, while cotton is lighter and often washable – both feel soft in a bedroom or living room. Silk and viscose look luxurious but are delicate, so keep them to low-traffic spaces.

Yes. Kitchen runner rugs work well in a galley layout near the sink, or to define a zone alongside an island – choose a low-pile or washable design, and darker tones help disguise marks. For bedroom runner rugs, a soft wool or cotton option down each side of a double or king bed gives you something warm to step onto.
