The Afshar Shahre Babak rugs are rooted in the rich weaving traditions of the Middle Eastern Afshar tribes. These nomadic and semi-nomadic groups have historically moved across the high plateaus of the region, carrying their looms and aesthetic traditions with them. The Shahre Babak region is particularly renowned for producing some of the most distinctive and highly sought-after examples of this craft.

The term 'hand-knotted' refers to the traditional method where each strand of Wool is tied by hand around the foundation threads. This creates a durable, high-density pile that is far more resistant to wear than mass-produced alternatives. The density of the knots determines the intricacy of the patterns, allowing for the precise, vibrant motifs that this region is famous for.

Visually, these rugs are defined by their bold geometric language. They often feature central medallions, diamond shapes, and a variety of tribal motifs that hold symbolic meaning within the weaving culture. The colour palettes are typically deep and earthy, utilising traditional dyes that provide a warm, saturated appearance that ages gracefully over time.

Collectors value these pieces not only for their beauty but for their cultural significance. Owning an Afshar Shahre Babak rug is an opportunity to preserve a piece of nomadic heritage. Because these designs are passed down through generations and interpreted by individual weavers, each rug serves as a unique cultural artifact that celebrates human skill and creativity.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted, a process that requires immense patience and skill. With a knot density of 160,000 knots per m2, the artisan has placed over 18,000 individual knots to bring this design to life. This level of precision is what defines the quality and longevity of the piece.

The production of a rug this size involves months of dedicated labour. Every knot is tied by hand, ensuring that the pile is dense, uniform, and incredibly resilient. This hands-on approach allows for the nuanced colour transitions and sharp, clear motifs that are characteristic of the finest hand-knotted rugs.
