Afshar / SirjanHand KnottedRug

Black / Dark red160 x 263 cm

The Afshar rugs originate from the nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes of the Middle Eastern region, specifically the Kerman province. These tribes have a long-standing tradition of weaving that is deeply connected to their lifestyle, environment, and social structure. Over centuries, these weavers developed a distinct visual vocabulary that reflects their surroundings and cultural identity, resulting in rugs that are highly prized for their authenticity.

Technical mastery is a hallmark of this tradition. The use of high-quality wool, often sourced from their own flocks, ensures a lustrous and durable pile that ages gracefully. The construction techniques are passed down through generations, emphasising a tight knotting style that provides both structural longevity and a refined surface texture that feels soft and substantial to the touch.

The design of these rugs is characterised by a strong geometric sensibility. You will often find bold, angular medallions and repeating motifs that draw inspiration from the natural world and tribal symbolism. The colour palette typically favours deep, earthy tones, with the use of natural dyes creating a depth and richness that is difficult to replicate with modern methods. This particular piece showcases these traditions through its striking composition and careful balance of space and pattern.

Owning an Afshar rug is an investment in a living heritage. These pieces are not merely decorative items but are reflections of a nomadic craft that has survived despite the pressures of modernisation. By bringing one into your home, you are preserving the skill of the artisans and celebrating a form of artistic expression that prizes individual variation, cultural narrative, and the enduring quality of handmade objects.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans, a labour-intensive process that transforms raw fibres into a durable and vibrant textile. With a density of 160,000 knots per m2, this 263 x 160 cm piece contains approximately 673,000 individually tied knots. The sheer volume of human effort required to complete such a detailed design is significant, often taking a dedicated artisan several months of focused work.

The quality of this rug is further evidenced by its weight of 10.5 kg, which reflects the generous amount of high-quality wool used in its construction. This weight is a testament to the density and robustness of the piece, ensuring that it remains stable and resilient even in high-traffic areas of your home. Every knot is placed with intention, contributing to a final product that balances aesthetic delicacy with long-term functional strength.
