This Afghan runner reflects a storied tradition of rug making, translated into a contemporary design language. By choosing this piece, you are bringing a genuine touch of artistry into your living space, with a quality that is designed to endure for years to come.

The tradition of Berber-style rugs originates from the nomadic tribes of North Africa, but the craft has long since travelled across the Middle East and Central Asia. In Afghanistan, skilled artisans have adopted these techniques, blending local Wool and traditional knotting methods to create pieces that are both robust and aesthetically distinct.

Hand-knotted construction is the hallmark of quality in this tradition. This method involves tying individual strands of Wool to the warp and weft threads of the foundation, a process that creates a much more durable and dense structure than machine-woven alternatives. The result is a rug that is naturally resistant to wear and retains its vibrant colours for decades.

The design of this runner is defined by a rhythmic, repeating checkerboard motif. This geometric approach is a classic feature of the style, often used to showcase the natural variations in the Wool's ability to take dye. The alternating blocks of colour create a sense of movement and energy, making the rug a bold statement piece in any interior setting.

Owning a hand-knotted piece from this tradition is more than just a purchase; it is an investment in heritage. These rugs are highly valued by collectors for their authenticity and the sheer level of human skill required to produce them. By bringing this runner into your home, you are continuing a long-standing legacy of craft that prioritises longevity and individual expression.

This runner is meticulously hand-knotted, a process that requires immense patience and skill from the artisan. Each knot is individually tied by hand onto the foundation, building up the pile layer by layer to ensure a robust and long-lasting construction that maintains its shape over time.

Given the generous weight of 5.9 kg, this rug possesses a substantial density that speaks to the quality of the Wool and the depth of the weave. This weight is a direct result of the effort invested in the knotting process, providing a premium feel and a thickness of 10 mm that offers a plush, comfortable cushion underfoot.

The time and human effort required to complete a piece of this size and density are significant, reflecting a commitment to traditional techniques that no machine can replicate. This dedication to craft results in a rug with consistent pile integrity and a vibrant, clear design that will hold its beauty for a lifetime of daily use.

Wool

Wool is a fantastic natural fibre with many benefits, it is durable and hard-wearing, which means that a rug made from wool can be used for several generations and maintain its quality. They are an excellent choice for keeping your rooms warm during the cold winter months and can reduce noise from everyday life. The material also has a natural dirt-repellent effect which makes wool rugs easy to keep clean. Wool has a natural elasticity, which means that when the pile is pressed down, it can easily bounce back to its original shape.
