Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Brown124 x 184 cm

The Bokhara rug tradition is deeply rooted in the history of Central Asian nomadic tribes, whose weaving practices travelled across the Silk Road. While the name itself is derived from the ancient city of Bukhara, the finest modern iterations of this style are predominantly produced in Pakistan, where artisans have perfected the technique to produce rugs of exceptional consistency and beauty.

The '2ply' designation refers to the specific way the wool is prepared, where two strands are twisted together before being used in the knotting process. This technical choice is significant because it results in a pile that is not only denser and more luxurious to the touch but also significantly more durable. It allows the rug to withstand years of foot traffic while retaining its characteristic sheen.

Visually, these rugs are defined by the iconic 'gul' motif—a repeating, elephant-foot-shaped medallion that symbolises tribal heritage and protection. These medallions are typically arranged in clean, formal rows, framed by intricate geometric borders that draw the eye toward the centre. The use of deep, warm tones is a hallmark of the style, creating a sense of harmony and balance.

Collecting a Pakistani Bokhara is an investment in a storied craft that bridges the gap between ancient nomadic art and modern interior design. These rugs are valued not just for their aesthetic appeal, but for the human skill and cultural legacy they represent. To own one is to possess a piece of history that continues to be relevant and cherished in contemporary homes.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans, a process that relies on generations of expertise and immense patience. With a density of 160,000 knots per m², this piece contains approximately 364,000 individual knots. This high density is what gives the rug its sharp, clear pattern definition and a robust, dense pile that is built to stand the test of time.

The creation of such a rug requires months of dedicated focus. Every individual knot is tied by hand, ensuring that the structure is tight and the foundation is secure. This labour-intensive method is the only way to achieve such a high level of precision and material durability, resulting in a finished product that is far superior to any mass-produced alternative.

The quality of this construction is further evidenced by its substantial weight of 5.7 kg, which reflects the generous amount of high-quality wool used in its creation. This density not only contributes to the luxurious feel of the pile but also ensures that the rug remains stable and durable, providing a level of quality that only hand-knotted craftsmanship can offer.
