Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Black / Dark red197 x 260 cm

Bokhara rugs take their name from the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara, a historic trade hub in Central Asia. While the design tradition originated in this region, the finest examples today are primarily woven in Pakistan. This evolution reflects the migration of weaving skills across borders, as artisans adapted traditional techniques to meet the tastes of a global audience while maintaining the core identity of the craft.

The term 2ply is a crucial indicator of quality in this tradition. It means the wool in the pile is made from two strands twisted together before knotting. This technique is superior to single-strand construction because it creates a much denser, more durable, and more lustrous pile that resists wear and retains its shape better over many years of use.

The signature visual language of a Bokhara rug is defined by the repeating gul motif, which often looks like an elephant's footprint or an octagonal medallion. These motifs are typically arranged in clean, formal rows across the field and framed by intricate, geometric borders. The deep, warm red field is a hallmark of this style, providing a classic and grounded aesthetic that has been favoured for generations.

Owning a hand-knotted Bokhara is an opportunity to connect with a long lineage of craft and cultural heritage. These rugs are highly valued by collectors and homeowners alike for their blend of historical design and exceptional durability. By choosing this piece, you are acquiring a part of a living tradition that celebrates human skill, patient effort, and a timeless approach to home decoration.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate countless hours to ensuring every strand is perfectly placed. With a density of 250,000 knots per m2, the construction process is incredibly labour-intensive, often requiring several months of work to complete a single rug of this size. This high knot density is essential for creating the sharp, clear pattern definition and the incredibly dense, resilient pile that defines a premium rug of this calibre.

The weight of 12.8 kg is a testament to the significant amount of high-quality wool used in its creation. This substantial weight provides a stable, heavy feel that indicates a dense foundation and superior construction. By investing this level of time and material, the artisans ensure that the rug is not only visually striking but also built to endure, providing a level of durability that is only possible through traditional hand-knotting methods.

Every aspect of this rug's production reflects a commitment to the craft. The precision required to maintain such a high knot count across the entire surface area of 260 x 197 cm is a remarkable feat of human skill. This dedication results in a finished product that is far more durable and complex than anything created by a machine, offering a quality that you can feel every time you walk across it.
