Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Black / Dark blue245 x 300 cm

The Bokhara rug tradition takes its name from the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara, which served as a historic hub for textile trade and craftsmanship. While these designs have their roots in Central Asia, the finest contemporary examples are woven in Pakistan, where artisans have refined and elevated the traditional techniques to produce rugs of exceptional quality and consistency.

The term 2ply in the construction of this rug refers to the practice of twisting two strands of Wool together before weaving them into the foundation. This method creates a pile that is not only more lustrous and visually rich but also significantly more durable and resistant to wear, ensuring the rug remains a long-lasting feature in your home.

Visually, this tradition is defined by the iconic gul motif, which appears as repeating octagonal or elephant-foot shapes across the field. In this specific piece, the motifs are arranged in a balanced, rhythmic layout, framed by ornate, geometric borders that highlight the precision of the design. The choice of a soft blue field adds a contemporary, tranquil feel to these traditional patterns.

Collecting a hand-knotted rug from this tradition is an act of preserving cultural heritage. These pieces are valued for their technical complexity and the human story behind every knot. Owning such a rug signifies an appreciation for fine craftsmanship and a commitment to quality that transcends fast-paced interior trends.

This rug is a masterpiece of hand-knotted construction, a labour-intensive process that requires immense skill and patience. With a density of 250,000 knots per m2, the creation of this 300 x 245 cm rug involves approximately 183,750 individual knots, all tied by hand by master artisans. This high knot count is essential for achieving the sharp, clear pattern definition and the incredibly dense, durable pile that defines its premium quality.

The sheer scale of the effort involved is reflected in the rug's weight of 18.4 kg, which signals the substantial amount of high-quality Wool used in its construction. This density ensures that the rug remains stable and resilient underfoot, demonstrating a commitment to longevity that machine-made alternatives simply cannot match.

Every inch of this piece reflects the dedication of the weaver, who spends months perfecting the tension and alignment of every single knot. This process results in a rug that is not only beautiful but structurally sound, designed to hold its shape and vibrancy for generations to come.
