Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Dark grey / Black63 x 96 cm

Bokhara rugs take their name from the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara in Central Asia, which historically served as a major trading hub for nomadic and settled weavers. Over generations, weavers migrated and brought these distinctive patterns to regions such as Pakistan, where local artisans preserved and refined the tradition to a very high standard.

The 2ply designation in the name refers to the specific construction of the pile yarn, where two individual strands of wool are twisted together before being knotted. This double-ply method produces a visibly denser, more resilient, and lustrous surface that outperforms single-ply alternatives in daily wear.

The visual language of this tradition is centred around repeating gul motifs, which are octagonal or elephant-foot medallions arranged in orderly rows across the field. Enclosed by structured, geometric borders, this layout creates a balanced and harmonious aesthetic that has remained cherished for centuries.

Owning a rug from this heritage tradition means acquiring a piece of living craft history that represents incredible skill and cultural continuity. These textiles are valued by collectors and homeowners alike for their enduring quality and the human dedication embedded in every single knot.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted by skilled artisans in Pakistan, a region renowned for its deep weaving heritage. Each individual knot is tied by hand onto the foundation, a meticulous process requiring immense patience, steady hands, and years of specialized training.

With a knot density of 160,000 knots per m2 and a total size of 96 x 63 cm, artisans hand-placed approximately 96,768 individual knots across the piece. Completing a rug of this density and detail takes weeks of dedicated, daily labour by master weavers.

Weighing 1.5 kg, the dense construction reflects the substantial amount of natural wool and human effort invested in its creation. This careful hand-knotting technique results in a durable, tightly bound pile that anchors the intricate geometric motifs with exceptional sharpness.
