Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Black / Dark red94 x 159 cm

Bokhara rugs take their design roots from the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara in Central Asia, where nomadic and village weavers created iconic patterns for trade and daily life. Over generations, the tradition migrated southward, and today some of the finest examples are crafted by skilled weavers in Pakistan who maintain these time-honoured methods.

The term 2ply refers to the specific way the wool is prepared for weaving, using two distinct strands twisted together before being knotted into the foundation. This creates a denser, more lustrous, and remarkably resilient pile compared to single-ply alternatives, ensuring the rug handles daily wear with ease.

The defining visual feature of this tradition is the repeating gul motif, an octagonal or elephant-foot shaped medallion arranged in neat rows across the field. Enclosed by structured geometric borders, these motifs reflect a deep heritage of symmetry and order that has remained popular for centuries.

Collecting a rug from this tradition means bringing home a piece of living heritage shaped by human skill and cultural history. It represents an enduring appreciation for quality materials and patient craftsmanship that stands apart from modern mass production.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted by skilled artisans in Pakistan, representing months of careful, human effort. Every single knot is placed by hand, resulting in a total count of approximately 374,000 knots across the entire surface of this rug.

This high density of 250,000 knots per m2 is what gives the pattern its sharp definition and creates a remarkably dense pile that resists flattening over time. Weighing 3.7 kg, the substantial construction reflects the generous amount of material and labor invested in its creation.

The meticulous hand-knotting technique requires immense patience and precision, ensuring that the structure remains strong and durable for generations to come. This dedication to craft is what makes each handmade rug a lasting investment in your home.
