KashmarHand KnottedRug

Brown / Black197 x 300 cm

The Kashmar rug tradition originates from the city of Kashmar in the Middle Eastern region, a location with a rich history of textile production that dates back centuries. These rugs are highly regarded for their ability to blend traditional regional motifs with a distinctive, often grand, sense of scale and artistic detail that reflects the cultural heritage of their birthplace.

The quality of these pieces is often defined by the use of high-quality wool, which is carefully processed to create a pile that is both durable and lustrous. The term hand-knotted refers to the traditional method where individual strands of wool are tied onto a sturdy foundation, a technique that requires immense skill and attention to detail to ensure the rug remains strong and beautiful for generations.

Signature design elements of the Kashmar style often include elaborate floral patterns, often centred around a medallion or featuring flowing vase motifs. The intricate borders and the balanced use of colour are hallmarks of this tradition. This particular rug captures that classic essence, showcasing the typical floral complexity that makes these pieces so recognisable and sought after by collectors.

Owning a piece from this tradition is an investment in human skill and historical artistry. Because each rug is created individually, they are valued for their uniqueness and the story they tell through their specific colour and pattern choices. Collectors treasure these rugs for their ability to serve as a bridge between the ancient craft traditions of the Middle East and the contemporary home.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of focused effort to its creation. By tying each individual knot by hand, the weavers achieve a level of precision and detail that is impossible to replicate with machinery. This intensive process ensures a robust foundation and a pile that remains dense and vibrant over time.

With an impressive total of approximately 1,477,500 individual knots, the complexity of this piece is a direct reflection of the immense human skill involved. The high knot density allows for the crisp, fluid lines of the floral patterns, which appear remarkably sharp and defined. This density also contributes to the rug's substantial weight of 29.6 kg, signalling the high quality of materials and the dedication invested in its construction.

The sheer number of knots required for a piece of this scale highlights the profound level of craft and patience necessary to bring such a design to life. Each knot is a testament to the artisan's expertise, resulting in a durable and resilient rug that stands as a true example of premium craftsmanship. Owning this piece means supporting a tradition of excellence that values quality above all else.
