Choosing this rug means welcoming a singular piece of art into your home that belongs to you alone.

Woven by hand in Afghanistan, the rug showcases a vibrant teal background beautifully balanced by rows of orange and multicoloured diamond motifs. The traditional fringes at both ends complete its classic look, while the rich colour palette adds a lively yet sophisticated focal point to any room.

Design

The rug features a vibrant multicolour composition with a predominantly teal background and a central field filled with rows of orange and multicoloured diamond shapes. The outer borders consist of geometric panels and alternating motifs in various shades including blue, green, and pink. The surface is completely flat with a structured appearance and a traditional fringe at both ends.

The Kelim Afghan tradition is rooted in the nomadic and semi-nomadic weaving cultures of Afghanistan. Traditionally, these flatwoven rugs were crafted not just for floor coverings, but as functional household items, bags, and protective blankets. The patterns and techniques have been passed down through generations, reflecting the daily lives and environments of the weavers.

A Kelim, or flatweave, is constructed by tightly interweaving the warp and weft strands of the weave to produce a flat surface with no pile. This hand-woven technique results in a highly durable and reversible textile that is significantly lighter than knotted rugs. The Old Style designation refers to the use of traditional design layouts and colour combinations that honour historical Afghan weaving heritages.

The visual language of this Kelim is defined by its bold geometric patterns, particularly the repeating diamond motifs that symbolise protection and strength. The intricate borders and contrasting colour blocks create a busy, detailed composition that is characteristic of Afghan tribal designs. The use of a teal field alongside warm orange and multicolour accents offers a beautiful modern twist on classic regional palettes.

Owning an authentic Afghan Kelim is a way to connect with a rich textile heritage that has survived for centuries. These rugs are highly valued for their honest craftsmanship and the individual expression of the weaver. They bring a sense of history and global craftsmanship into contemporary spaces, serving as a beautiful bridge between traditional artistry and modern living.

This Kelim is hand woven using traditional flatweaving techniques that require immense skill and patience. The artisan works on a loom, carefully interlacing the wool threads to create both the structure and the intricate geometric patterns simultaneously. This method ensures a tight, durable weave that lies completely flat.

With a weight of 3.2 kg for its 205 x 154 cm size, this rug demonstrates a dense and substantial weave. Every single colour change and geometric block is created by hand, demanding hours of focused attention to maintain even tension and pattern alignment. This level of human dedication is what gives the rug its exceptional durability and unique character.

Wool

Wool is a fantastic natural fibre with many benefits, it is durable and hard-wearing, which means that a rug made from wool can be used for several generations and maintain its quality. They are an excellent choice for keeping your rooms warm during the cold winter months and can reduce noise from everyday life. The material also has a natural dirt-repellent effect which makes wool rugs easy to keep clean. Wool has a natural elasticity, which means that when the pile is pressed down, it can easily bounce back to its original shape.
