This hand-woven Kelim rug offers a flat and practical texture underfoot, making it an excellent choice for areas where doors need to open easily. Crafted from wool, the rug provides a natural warmth and a grounded feel that enhances the comfort of your living space.

As a truly one-of-a-kind piece, this rug carries its own distinct character. No two pieces are ever identical, meaning that when you bring this rug into your home, you are acquiring a unique work of textile art that cannot be replicated or replaced.

Woven in Afghanistan, the rug showcases a beautiful balance of traditional design and contemporary energy. Its low 5 mm thickness and lightweight nature make it easy to move and position, while the durable wool construction ensures it remains a cherished part of your home for years to come.

Kelim weaving in Afghanistan is an ancient nomadic art form, historically crafted by tribal weavers for practical use as floor coverings, blankets, and storage bags. These flat-woven textiles were designed to be lightweight and easy to transport, reflecting the mobile lifestyle of the weavers.

The term Kelim refers to a flat-weave technique where the pattern is created by weaving the coloured weft threads directly through the warp. This method produces a smooth, pile-free surface that is often reversible, showcasing the clean structure of the weave on both sides.

This style is characterised by bold geometric patterns, including repeating diamond motifs and structured decorative borders. The vibrant multicolour palette used in this piece highlights the creative choices of the weaver, who balances contrasting tones to bring the traditional geometric layout to life.

Owning an Afghan Kelim means bringing a piece of living history into your home. Each rug represents a continuation of shared weaving knowledge, passed down through generations, making it a valued addition for collectors and design enthusiasts alike.

This rug is hand-woven by skilled artisans in Afghanistan using centuries-old flat-weaving techniques. Unlike knotted rugs, a Kelim is created by tightly interweaving the horizontal and vertical threads, a process that requires steady hand coordination and deep knowledge of geometric mapping.

With a weight of 1 kg for its compact 125 x 82 cm size, the rug demonstrates a tight and secure weave. This careful construction ensures the flat surface remains stable and durable, showcasing the direct human effort and time invested in creating a functional piece of art.

Wool

Wool is a fantastic natural fibre with many benefits, it is durable and hard-wearing, which means that a rug made from wool can be used for several generations and maintain its quality. They are an excellent choice for keeping your rooms warm during the cold winter months and can reduce noise from everyday life. The material also has a natural dirt-repellent effect which makes wool rugs easy to keep clean. Wool has a natural elasticity, which means that when the pile is pressed down, it can easily bounce back to its original shape.
