KoliaiHand KnottedRug

Black / Brown151 x 300 cm

Koliai rugs originate from the mountainous regions of the Middle East, where the Kurdish tribes have developed a distinct weaving tradition over many generations. These rugs are deeply connected to the semi-nomadic lifestyle of their creators, reflecting the rugged landscapes and vibrant cultural heritage of the area.

The term Koliai refers to the specific tribal style that prioritises bold, geometric expression and a robust construction. These pieces are traditionally made using a heavy Wool pile, which is prized for its strength and ability to hold deep, saturated natural dyes that remain vibrant for decades.

Visually, these rugs are defined by their expansive fields, often occupied by large, central medallions and surrounded by ornate decorative borders. The motifs are often stylised, drawing on ancient tribal symbols that tell stories of the region's history, while the colour palettes are typically warm and earthy, rooted in the natural materials found in the surrounding landscape.

Collectors and enthusiasts value these rugs for their authenticity and the palpable sense of human effort woven into every thread. Owning a Koliai is more than just a decor choice; it is an acquisition of a cultural artefact that celebrates the skill of generations of weavers and preserves a traditional craft that remains largely unchanged by time.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate significant time and effort to each piece. With a density of 90,000 knots per m2, the creation process is a labour-intensive journey that ensures the final result is exceptionally durable and capable of withstanding years of daily use.

The sheer weight of 22.7 kg across its 300 x 151 cm dimensions is a testament to the high volume of Wool used in its construction. This density not only contributes to the rug's longevity but also provides a heavy, luxurious feel that stays firmly in place on your floor.

By choosing a hand-knotted piece, you are investing in a craft that prioritises precision and quality over speed. The time required to carefully place every individual knot results in a rug with remarkable pattern clarity and a resilient pile that maintains its texture and appeal for generations.
