Kunduz rugs originate from the northern Afghan province of Kunduz, an area known for its rich weaving heritage near historical trade routes. Artisans in this region have spent generations refining their craft, blending local techniques with stylistic influences shared across Central Asian communities.

The traditional naming of these pieces reflects their geographical roots and the specific weaving dialects unique to Afghan workshops. Weavers utilise time-tested methods, selecting resilient natural fibres to construct rugs that are built to withstand daily use while preserving their intricate artistry.

Design traditions in Kunduz rugs typically feature repeating geometric motifs, medallion layouts, and structured borders that frame the central field. The precise arrangement of these symbols creates a balanced visual rhythm, deeply rooted in the cultural storytelling of the artisans who create them.

Owning a handmade rug from this tradition means preserving a piece of living heritage. Collectors and interior enthusiasts value these textiles for their authentic craftsmanship, cultural depth, and the enduring connection they provide to the skilled hands that shaped them.

This Kunduz rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who spend months tying each individual strand by hand. With a density of 90,000 knots per m2, the construction process requires immense precision and patience, resulting in a total count of approximately 540,000 expertly placed knots.

This high level of knot density ensures that the pattern remains exceptionally sharp and defined, while the dense pile structure firmly locks the fibres in place for superior durability. The substantial weight of 18 kg further reflects the generous amount of natural materials and dedicated labour invested in its creation.

The traditional hand-knotting technique used here is a craft passed down through generations, ensuring a level of structural integrity that automated looms simply cannot replicate. Every row of knots represents hours of focused human effort, culminating in a resilient floor covering of remarkable quality.
