Light Nomad KilimHand WovenRug

Orange / Beige120 x 180 cm

The Ghashghai people, a confederation of nomadic tribes in the Middle East, are renowned for their distinctive weaving traditions. These rugs were historically created by tribal women to serve practical needs within their migratory lifestyle, evolving into a celebrated art form that reflects the landscape and spirit of their culture.

A Kelim is a flat-woven rug, characterised by the absence of a raised pile. This technique involves wrapping the coloured weft threads around the warp, creating a smooth surface that is identical on both sides. This method is highly prized for its portability and strength, perfectly suited to the nomadic heritage of the Ghashghai tribes.

The design language of this tradition is defined by bold geometric forms and medallions, often inspired by the natural environment and tribal symbols. The use of repeating motifs and symbolic shapes tells stories of the weaver's life and environment, with each rug serving as a vibrant, visual record of a living culture.

Collecting a Ghashghai Kelim is an investment in human skill and cultural legacy. These rugs are highly valued for their authenticity and the labour-intensive nature of their creation. Owning one means connecting to a tradition that has been passed down through generations, preserving a unique sense of heritage in your modern home.

This Kelim is meticulously hand-woven, a process that requires immense patience and skill. By interlacing the Wool and cotton yarns, the weaver creates a flat-weave structure that is both lightweight and incredibly resilient, standing up to daily wear while retaining its shape.

Weighing 4.3 kg for its 180 x 120 cm size, this rug demonstrates the density and effort invested in its construction. This substantial weight is a direct result of the high-quality materials and the tightness of the weave, which provides the durability necessary for a rug intended to last for years.

The process of creating such a balanced, intricate design without the use of automated machinery highlights the artisan's dedication. Each shift in colour and pattern is guided by tradition and human touch, resulting in a finished piece that carries the unique signature of its maker.
