Moroccan BerberHand KnottedRug

Brown / Orange143 x 185 cm

The Berber rug tradition is one of the most celebrated in the world of textiles, originally rooted in the craft practices of indigenous tribes in North Africa. While these rugs have become iconic for their minimalist and geometric aesthetics, the tradition has evolved over time, with weavers in the Middle East adopting these styles to create their own interpretations that blend historical techniques with modern design sensibilities.

When we speak of hand-knotted construction, we are referring to a method where individual knots are tied by hand onto a foundation of warp and weft threads. This is the hallmark of quality in rug making, as it creates a cohesive, durable structure that allows for intricate pattern work and a pile that is firmly anchored, ensuring it remains plush and vibrant for years to come.

The design of this rug features a distinct geometric language, utilising a variety of shapes and multicoloured accents that contrast beautifully against the natural, undyed Wool field. These motifs are often symbolic, reflecting the surroundings and creative spirit of the weaver, and the inclusion of such a diverse colour palette is a hallmark of the artistic freedom found in this specific style of Berber-inspired weaving.

Collecting a rug from this tradition is about more than just floor coverage; it is about honouring a lineage of craft that has been passed down through generations. These pieces are valued for their raw, honest beauty and the visible human touch present in every detail, making them essential for those who appreciate the cultural weight and enduring quality of handmade textiles.

This rug is carefully hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate significant time and effort to each creation. The process involves individual placement of every strand of Wool, a labour-intensive method that ensures a level of durability and pile density that mass-produced alternatives simply cannot match.

With a weight of 14 kg for its 185 x 143 cm dimensions, this rug demonstrates a substantial density and a high volume of material. This significant weight is a direct indicator of the human effort and quality materials invested in its construction, resulting in a robust piece that provides a stable and long-lasting foundation for your home.
