Pakistan Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Brown / Beige196 x 259 cm

Bokhara rugs take their name from the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara in Central Asia, a historical hub for trade and textile artistry. While the design motifs originated in the nomadic traditions of the region, the finest examples of these rugs today are expertly woven in Pakistan. This evolution reflects the migration of weaving skills across borders, blending ancient aesthetics with modern precision.

The term 2ply refers to the construction of the wool pile, where two strands of fibre are twisted together before being knotted. This technique is essential for creating a pile that is not only denser and more lustrous but also significantly more durable than single-ply alternatives. It is this specific craft detail that gives the rug its signature soft feel and long-lasting quality.

The visual language of the Bokhara is defined by its iconic gul motifs—repeating, octagonal or elephant-foot shaped medallions arranged in clean, structured rows. These motifs are traditionally enclosed by complex, geometric borders that frame the field. This particular rug honours those traditions, showcasing a classic layout that has been celebrated by collectors for generations for its balance and formal grace.

Owning a hand-knotted rug from this tradition is about more than just decor; it is about acquiring a piece of cultural history. These rugs are highly valued for their timeless patterns and the sheer human skill required to produce them. By bringing this piece into your home, you are participating in a long-standing tradition of craftsmanship that prioritises quality, heritage, and the enduring beauty of handmade textiles.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted, a labour-intensive process that requires immense skill and patience. With a density of 360,000 knots per m2, the artisan has invested countless hours to ensure every single knot is perfectly placed. This high level of precision results in a remarkably durable pile that maintains its beauty and structural integrity for years to come.

The sheer density of 360,000 knots per m2 provides a level of detail and resilience that only hand-knotted construction can achieve. Given the total size of this piece, the amount of human effort involved is significant, as each knot is a testament to the artisan's dedication to their craft. This careful approach ensures that the finished rug is not only aesthetically pleasing but also robust enough to withstand daily use.
