Bokhara rugs take their name from the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara in Central Asia, a historic hub for trade and textile artistry. While the design traditions originated in the nomadic tribes of the steppes, the finest examples of these rugs today are expertly woven in Pakistan, where artisans have refined the craft over generations to maintain the iconic aesthetic.

The term 2ply refers to a construction method where the pile is woven using two strands of wool twisted together. This technique is significant because it produces a pile that is noticeably denser, more lustrous, and more resilient than single-ply alternatives. It provides a tactile richness that is both beautiful to look at and deeply comfortable to live with.

The design of this rug is characterised by the repeating gul motif, which are typically octagonal or elephant-foot shaped medallions arranged in precise rows. These are enclosed by formal, decorative borders that frame the field, creating a balanced and symmetrical appearance that has been celebrated for its elegance and visual rhythm for centuries.

Owning a hand-knotted rug from this tradition is an investment in cultural heritage and long-lasting skill. These pieces are highly valued by collectors not just for their aesthetic beauty, but for the human history embedded in every knot, representing a level of craft that remains a hallmark of high-quality textile production.

This piece is hand-knotted with a density of 250,000 knots per m2, a level of precision that ensures both fine pattern detail and long-term durability. Across its total surface area, this represents an immense amount of work, reflecting the skill and dedication of the artisans who spend months bringing this intricate design to life.

The 12.6 kg weight of the rug is a clear indicator of the dense, material-rich construction that defines its quality. This weight, relative to its size, confirms the use of a substantial amount of high-quality wool, resulting in a pile that is not only dense and luxurious but also built to withstand the demands of a busy home.

The combination of this high knot density and overall weight confirms the premium nature of the construction. Every single knot is placed by hand, ensuring a structural integrity that supports the longevity of the rug and highlights the deep, considered effort invested in every square centimetre of the final piece.
