Pakistan Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Brown / Beige63 x 92 cm

Bokhara rugs take their name from the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara in Central Asia, a historical hub for trade and textile artistry. While the design roots are deeply connected to these nomadic traditions, the finest examples of this style today are predominantly crafted in Pakistan, where weavers have perfected the technique over generations.

The term 2ply refers to the construction of the yarn, where two strands of wool are twisted together before being knotted. This specific method is significant because it results in a pile that is not only denser and more lustrous but also far more durable than single-ply alternatives, ensuring the rug maintains its integrity over time.

Visually, these rugs are defined by their elegant use of repeating gul motifs, often shaped like octagons or elephant feet, arranged in rhythmic rows across the field. This specific piece features a striking red field paired with balanced geometric borders, showcasing a traditional aesthetic that remains highly sought after for its symmetry and visual harmony.

Owning a piece from this tradition is about more than just decor. It represents a connection to a centuries-old heritage of skill and patience. Collectors value these rugs for their ability to bring a sense of history and cultural depth into a modern home, serving as a testament to the lasting power of traditional craft.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate significant time to every single stitch. The process begins with a sturdy foundation, upon which the wool is carefully knotted to create a dense and durable pile that resists wear.

With a density of 360,000 knots per m2, the precision of this construction is evident in the sharpness of the design and the richness of the texture. A high knot count means a more detailed pattern and a longer-lasting rug, as the tightly packed fibres provide superior resilience against daily use. A piece of this size and complexity requires weeks of focused, human effort to complete, ensuring that every knot is placed with care.

The substantial weight of 1.4 kg for such a compact size is a testament to the amount of high-quality material used and the tightness of the weave. This level of craftsmanship is why the rug feels so grounded and substantial, offering a quality that mass-produced alternatives simply cannot match.
