TurkamanHand KnottedRug

Black / Dark red132 x 181 cm

Turkaman rugs originate from the nomadic tribes of Central Asia, a region with a long and storied history of weaving. While the style takes its name from the Turkmen people who traversed these lands, the craft has evolved over centuries, with many of the finest examples now being produced in the Middle East.

The technical quality of these rugs is often defined by their construction, which prioritises a dense, durable pile. The use of traditional hand-knotting techniques ensures that the wool pile remains resilient and lustrous over time, creating a surface that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Signature design elements often include repeating geometric motifs, most notably the 'gul' or tribal medallion, which is arranged in organised rows across the field. These patterns are typically framed by intricate, multi-layered borders that showcase the weaver's mastery of symmetry and balance.

Owning a Turkaman rug is more than just a decor choice; it is an investment in a storied cultural heritage. These rugs are highly valued by collectors for their consistency in craft and their ability to bring a sense of history and warmth into a contemporary home.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted, a process that requires immense patience and skill. With a density of 250,000 knots per m2, the creation of this 181 x 132 cm piece involves roughly 600,000 individual hand-tied knots. This significant labour investment is what ensures the rug's structural integrity and longevity.

The weight of 8.4 kg serves as a testament to the quality and density of the materials used. Each knot is placed with careful attention to detail, resulting in a consistent, firm foundation that defines the rug’s quality. This level of craftsmanship is why such a piece can be enjoyed for generations.
