Turkaman rugs originate from the nomadic tribes of the Central Asian steppes, a region known for its deep-rooted weaving heritage. Over generations, these weaving traditions migrated and evolved, with the finest contemporary examples often created in the Middle East. These rugs are celebrated for their distinctive aesthetic and the cultural narrative woven into every thread.

The term Turkaman refers to both the tribal origin and the specific design language of these rugs. The construction typically involves a dense knotting technique that creates a durable, luxurious pile. This precision in knotting is essential for maintaining the clarity of the complex, repeating patterns that define the style.

Signature design elements of the Turkaman tradition include the iconic gul motif, which is an octagonal medallion often representing tribal emblems. These medallions are traditionally arranged in orderly rows across the field, framed by elaborate, geometric borders. The deep red palette is a hallmark of the tradition, symbolising strength and vitality.

Owning a Turkaman rug is an opportunity to connect with a storied past. These pieces are highly valued by collectors for their cultural significance and the immense skill required to produce them. By acquiring this runner, you are preserving a legacy of craft that has been passed down through centuries, bringing a piece of history into your daily life.

Each Turkaman runner is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans. This laborious process involves tying thousands of individual knots to form the foundation and pattern, a technique that requires immense precision and patience to ensure the rug maintains its shape and beauty over many years.

With a density of 160,000 knots per m2, this runner represents a significant investment of time and human skill. The total knot count for a piece of this size reflects the dedication required to achieve such sharp pattern definition and a dense, resilient pile that will stand the test of time.

The weight of 5.4 kg for a rug of this size is a testament to the quality and density of the materials used. This substantial construction ensures the runner stays firmly in place and provides a satisfying, heavy drape that distinguishes it as a premium, handcrafted item.
